Thirty! It feels like a major birthday. There’s all kinds of tacky nonsense for 30th birthdays. It ends in a zero. I feel the need to do something for it, but I’m so used to ignoring my stupid birthday that I don’t even know what to do.
I know I get one-upped by Christmas and other holiday babies, but I’m so used to having a dumb summer birthday that meh. Meh, I tell you.
Meh
. I finally got to have it sort of during the year in junior high and high school because Washington’s schools let out in mid-June, but often it just ended up during finals. That also sucked.
For most of my life, I got really used to parties where only a few people would show up, tops. That’s a buttload of leftover cake.
Even now, summer is when everyone goes on vacation. “Oh, you’re getting older. That’s cool. We’re en route to Le Mans, without you. Gonna spend a week driving aimlessly in Europe because we can. Mind if I just twist this knife a little harder?”
So, I don’t know what to do for my stupid birthday. Like most birthdays before it, it will probably go largely ignored except on Facebook, where people send in messages on the day of because Facebook told them to.
I just don’t know what actual so-called adults do for their birthdays. Cake seems overkill. I really don’t want all the cheesy “over the hill” baubles. Yo, my parents were born in the 1940s. That’s over the hill. Thirty isn’t over jack.
It’s not my 21st, so a Sixth-Street-style debauchery-fest holds zero appeal.
I’ve done karts before, which was okay, but it was hard to fill up a group to make it really worth it.
Part of me just wants to forget it and go drive the Porschelump.
I’m even kind of meh on presents unless it’s a) fixing my Porsche b) getting more track time for the Porsche or c) just getting me out of here. My turn to be away, dang it.
What do people even
do
for birthdays? Seriously, I’m at a loss.

My birthday was during the Mitty this year, so I drove down to Georgia and camped out all by myself and drank a case of beer all by myself. But I had a good time. But yeah I feel your pain, sorry.

Put on a playlist of stuff like Dashboard Confessional, Brand New, and Taking Back Sunday, and take the Lancer out for a drive? A bit poignant, but it allows you to reminisce on your youth without reliving it.

When my birthday happens to be in or around the same weekend of LeMans I have had a hard time trying to tell people that I don’t want to do anything for my birthday. All I really want to do is stay at home and watch the 24.
Also since my birthday is also in mid June I’m really used to it not being a huge deal while growing up. Maybe some cards in the mail, a meal with my parents and sister, and maybe another meal on a weekend with the extended family if they didn’t have something else going on.

I’m slightly older than you, I’m also a June baby (though end of the month) so I never got school birthdays. I’ve never liked being the center of attention anyway, so I’m not big on parties. At this point in my life, I just like to get away for a couple days. Go camping and spend some time fishing. Enjoy wilderness. Appreciate life.

1. Happy Birthday!
2. You are a really talented, and even generous writer. That is a gift you already have, and more precious than what you get at the typical party.
3. Screw tradition. Screw expectations. This is -your- day, so you get to decide what to do with it. If that’s driving the Porschelump in a random direction to explore a new road and have an adventure, awesome. And give yourself the day off to just enjoy the adventure and not worry about writing about it. You deserve that.
4. I really wish you a very good day, that doesn’t have to please anyone but you. Seriously, all the best.

Let’s see, I’m 38. I think. I might be 37, math is the worst.
Here’s what I’ve done for every one of my birthdays since I turned 16 (except when it falls on a Sunday): I go to work.
Obviously, I would also go to school first, during the appropriate years.
Really, any day is as special or as mundane as you want it to be, regardless of what anyone else has to say. And whether or not a day is special or not is not dependent on the involvement of other people. If driving the Porschelump makes you happy, then do that; why be beholden to other people’s expectations of how you are “celebrate” whatever arbitrary day you choose to celebrate. The same goes with artificially-weighted milestone ages. Thirty is only special because we use base-10 as our default math system; if we used base-12, no one would care about 30 and instead we’d all be bemoaning the arrival of our 36th birthday. The number itself is arbitrary and meaningless unless YOU choose to assign meaning to it, just like any day.
Celebrate any day you want, any way you want. Or don’t. Choose not to see any significance in turning 30, and instead, choose to make 68 years, five months, and 22 days (but only at 9:14 am) the moment you say, “Oh man, I’m THAT old now?” Or don’t.
Do some donuts. Donuts are fun any day. Who needs a reason to do donuts? You don’t need to win a NASCAR race to do donuts; they’re just as fun when you find a parking lot and just go to town, and you didn’t even have to hold your pee for four hours. Happy Birthday to you. Or not, you know, whatever day you want to do it.

I like to do things that are risky, challenging, or just outlandish. Over the years I’ve gone racing, sky diving, hang gliding, scuba diving, mountain biking, taken road trips, etc. Since moving to Louisiana, I’ve been riding my age every year - at least one mile on the bike for every year I’ve been alive. Not too big of a deal now, but might be a killer when I’m 90.
Let’s see, what did I do for my 30th birthday? Ah, yes. I got married.

For my 30th, which is towards the end of June, I had a bbq with a nerf gun war. A surprising amount of people showed up for that.
Now that I’m a dad, Father’s Day is within the same week, and often the same weekend/day, so I get screwed.
As for you, do whatever you want. Even if it’s nothing. My wife spent her 30th curled up in the fetal position crying. I don’t recommend that.

I turn 30 in August as well - same sentiments as you really. Most of my friends like cars, but aren’t into them that much, so...yeah, lol. They are mostly into PC gaming, which I am too, but I have 4 jobs, and very little time for it for awhile now, sadly.

See about renting yourself a cool car for the day. Check out Turo, or whatever else is in Austin. A day cruising around in a 911 seems to me a very Stef appropriate way to celebrate. Plus you don’t have to worry about friends bailing on you.
As a Dec. 21 baby, I’ve given up on having parties because everyone’s too busy with Christmas stuff to come. That, and half the time it gets snowed out anyway.

Silvercar is in Austin! Rent an A4 for the day and take it out the twisty back roads past Utopia to Garner State Park and stick your feet in the Frio river. Last time I was out that way I came across an M3/M4 club out hooning about on 470.
I’m 32. My 30th, 31st, and 32nd birthday celebrations consisted pretty much of going to DQ and substituting a normal dinner for the biggest Blizzard that they sell. It’s OK to not have a big party or celebration, but I like to do something small like that just to mark the day.

What do you want to do? Go take the Porschelump out, commit debauchery or just spend the evening at home. Birthdays, anniversaries, etc are just excuses to do things you wouldn’t normally do and treat yourself or friends or kids or dogs or lumps or whatever to foods or experiences that you don’t normally do.

I think I’m going to celebrate early by buying a cheap, falling apart car and teaching myself (and everyone else I know who’s willing to listen) how to drive stick. I’ve always wanted to learn but my attempts thus far to get some seat time have proved less than ideal, it’s time to do something for myself that I think it’ll make me happy and allow me to spend some quality time with the people I love (whilst grinding some gears lol).

There’s something distinctly unappealing about doing something by myself, though. I’ve had a lot of that lately. I need people somehow.
No one seems to rent out a manual, or be OK with track use. That’s a problem. If I’m going to drive around places I’ve driven around a thousand times lately, there are specific places that usually run in one looping direction that I’d rather do it. :o)

I’m buying a Crown Vic to turn into a daily drifter. You’d probably be best to start with a V6 New Edge Mustang, get the diff welded, throw in a hydro e-brake, throw on some Racelands, inflate the rear tires to 60psi, and have a blast. The whole build would cost you less than $2k, and the car will be able to run more or less reliably for quite a few events.

Well, you’ve got a week left. I say you play hooky and go crazy. Maybe take that Parshe out for a roadtrip. The write-up afterwards would be an interesting read.

My b-day is on D-Day. (Today) My wife and kids know to get me "anything with wheels" (as I always told my parents when asked what I wanted for my b-day). I still works!

Birthdays aren’t stupid until you hit 40. Maybe 50. Relax. Take your shoes off. You’re living the life - races, going to races, writing about races. Ok, not French races, but car races. I enjoy your work as do many others. You are great at your job and have a great job. Besides, you’ve been to France before. (Just kidding.) Have yourself a great time !

I share the same feelings on birthdays. My 29th is tomorrow and I’m not looking forward to my 30th either. meh...
Treat yourself to a track day? That’s pretty much what I’m doing.
btw, Happy Birthday!

I checked with my sharp-as-a-tack girlfriend. She hung up banners and streamers all over my apartment, covered the living room floor with 31 balloons (one for good luck), and we had a nice relaxing night in while I practiced yelling at young kids to get off my lawn.

On the day? I took the day off work.
On the weekend?I went out with my mates, got a gobbie, had fun.
This was all just a few short months ago. I’ll be 30 and a half shortly! (at what age does one stop being “and a half”?)
Also, happy birthday to you! I love reading your stuff

I went out for breakfast for my 30th. It was quiet and very nice.
It was also breakfast at a local brewery, so there was beer.

I’ve got a couple of years until I’m thirty (almost exactly), and will plan to save up for and do some awesome automotive thing. Most likely I’ll do a Team O’Neil, Dirtfish, Skip Barber, or Bondurant school. Granted, you’ve already done lots of fun race-y stuff, but I’d still pick something you haven’t done and go do that. Ever driven a Ford Model-T? It’s not exactly the most exciting automotive activity, but it is very fun. The Gilmore Auto Museum in Michigan, just north of Kalamazoo, offers a Model-T driving school. I did it a few weeks ago with two good buddies. Rented a nice lake house and had a great weekend for fairly cheap.
The other option; travel. Take a trip somewhere you’ve never been but always wanted to go. Celebrate getting older by celebrating life and exploring new places/experiences.

Thanks!
France was neat. I saw Porsche win for the first time since their big comeback and had to fight back the tears because I do
not
cry. Someone was eating an onion sandwich. Like, uh, a French onion soup, but a sandwich. With raw onions. I’ll see myself out.

I like this idea a lot. I kinda just want to skip the birthday-day and hoard funds to do the LeMons Rally.

Heh, I don’t think 35 is old, either. Maybe 50. 50 seems old.

I think I will. Or several. Or, heck, let’s just hoon the Porschelump.

Breweries tend to have the best food. I don’t know how, or if they just put beer in everything and that’s good in and of itself, but they’re usually delicious.

Sounds like an excellent idea to me!
Make an awesome memory. That’s the best gift you can get.
